leaves fall solar rises

By Theresa Ficazzola

It’s official. It’s autumn.

The leaves are falling, and so will the price of your electric bill, if you go solar.

Autumn is a time when the growing season has ended, and the harvesting of crops has begun.  But it’s also a great time to think about installing solar panels on your home in New York or New Jersey.

The autumnal equinox, which occurs on September 21, means that the sun is exactly above the equator.  Day and night are equal in length for that one day, then as we move further into autumn, day length decreases while night length increases until the start of winter.  Even though we experience shorter periods of sunlight in autumn, it’s still a very good time for solar.

A Great Time for Solar

Cool, crisp bright sunny days are best for solar and that’s exactly the type of weather we experience in the fall.  There’s usually little rain and clouds which means that solar panels can produce a lot of power, even with a shorter daylight period. And, since the temperature is not too hot, most people have turned off their air conditioners, so they’re using less electricity.  If you had solar panels, all that extra energy you produced during this time of year could be stored and used to offset your electric bill or even eliminate it completely when you need it.

The Beauty of Fall

Autumn, also known as fall, especially in the U.S., brings with it many experiences that make this a favorite season for many:

  • The beauty of colorful leaves that eventually fall to earth
  • Animals, such as squirrels, gather food to prepare for the scarcity of winter
  • Birds migrate towards warmer climates
  • Days begin with cool, crisp mornings and end with cool, crisp nights
  • People enjoy each other’s company near outdoor fire pits and toast marshmallows and smores
  • Temperatures begin to fall
  • Families go apple and pumpkin picking
  • Football season is in full swing
  • Halloween is right around the corner

Appreciate the Sun

There is a deep appreciation for the warm sunshine in the fall.  American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, wrote, “I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.”

So, get outside and enjoy the beauty of fall before it gets too cold and appreciate the sunshine.

The sun is a precious gift.

Like a good friend, it appears without asking and sometimes when we need it most.

It brightens our days and warms our soul, much like a generous host.

It provides us with free electricity – if we go solar – from coast to coast.
