Thank You For Your Service

“We, too, born to freedom, and believing in freedom, are willing to fight to maintain freedom. We, and all others who believe as deeply as we do, would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.” —Franklin D. Roosevelt

November 11th is Veterans Day—a day we recognize and honor those brave men and women who have so proudly served in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day because the major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.

The History of Veterans Day

“Whenever the world makes you cynical, whenever you seek true humility and true selflessness, look to a veteran.” —Barack Obama

According to Wikipedia:

The United States Congress adopted a resolution on June 4, 1926, requesting that President Calvin Coolidge issue annual proclamations calling for the observance of November 11th as Armistice Day with appropriate ceremonies.

In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had the idea of a national holiday that would honor all war veterans, living and dead, to be celebrated on Armistice Day. Mr. Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of National Veterans Day in 1947. President Eisenhower, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954, and in June, the holiday was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

The Department of Veterans Affairs

“All who have served in this cause are liberators in the best tradition of America. Their actions have made our nation safer in a world full of new dangers. Their actions have also upheld the ideals of America’s founding, which defines us still.” —George W. Bush

The United States government has been taking care of veterans since the American Revolutionary War.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a Cabinet-level executive branch department of the federal government charged with providing lifelong healthcare services to eligible military veterans at the 170 VA medical centers and outpatient clinics located throughout the country. Non-healthcare benefits include disability compensation, vocational rehabilitation, education assistance, home loans, and life insurance. The VA also provides burial and memorial benefits to eligible veterans and family members at 135 national cemeteries.

Far Too Many Wars and Lives Lost

“Our veterans don’t always go around telling stories of their heroism, so it’s up to us to ask and to listen, to tell those stories for them and to live in our own lives the values for which they were prepared to give theirs.” —Barack Obama

The majority of the US military casualties of war occurred in the following eight wars: American Revolutionary War (est. 8,000), American Civil War (218,222), World War I (53,402), World War II (291,567), Korean War (33,686), Vietnam War (47,424), Iraq War (3,836), and the War in Afghanistan (1,833). It is these wars that have primarily driven the mission and evolution of the VA.

A Word of Thanks from SI Solar

“The person you pass as you walk down the street might not be wearing our nation’s uniform today. But consider for a moment that a year or a decade or a generation ago, he or she might have been one of our fellow citizens who was willing to lay down their life for strangers like us.” —Barack Obama

We, at SI Solar, would like to extend our sincere thanks to all those veterans who have fought to protect our country and its citizens. There are not enough words to express how thankful we are to those men and women who voluntarily agree to uphold the values of our freedom.
