If you care about our planet, you should be aware of Earth Science Week (ESW)…and be an active proponent of making a difference.
ESW is held every year in mid-October to promote geoscience education and its relevance to everyday life. Established in 1998 by the American Geosciences Institute (AGI), ESW serves as a platform for educating students and the public about geoscience.
Earth sciences, the study of the earth and its surroundings, is comprised of 4 main fields of study:
· Geology
· Meteorology
· Oceanography
· Astronomy
Energy Resources for Our Future
This year’s theme of ESW, “Energy Resources for Our Future,” encourages us to become informed energy consumers and to actively work towards a sustainable future that ensures a high quality of life for future generations.
There are many ways to work towards a sustainable future for our planet—and it should be something we all think about and strive for every day of the year, not just in October.
· Recycling – recycle everything you can, every day. Set up recycle centers in your home and teach your children about the value of recycling and conserving water and electricity.
· Energy Efficiency for Your Home – with winter just around the corner, now is the time to check your home for places where heat escapes. Install a door sweep; place weather stripping around doors, windows and air conditioners; insulate your attic, basement and garage; wrap your water heater and pipes.
· Energy Efficiency for Your Car – combine trips to save gas, don’t idle your car while waiting for someone, use less heat, carpool with friends/relatives.
· Sustainable Food Sources – research the best stores and brands that follow sustainable practices.
· Sustainable Clothing and Household Goods – rather than throwing items away, consider donating or having a yard sale, so less items end up in landfills.
· Gardening – prepare an area of your yard for a spring garden. Consider planting your own vegetables and include an area for a pollinator garden that attracts bees and butterflies.
· Solar Panels – total US solar capacity is expected to grow to 673 GW by 2034, enough to power over 100 million homes. Plus, prices have fallen 43% over the last 10 years, while electricity costs, especially in the Northeast, continue to rise.
