new year get organized get solar

By Theresa Ficazzola

January is the perfect month to “GO”!  Get Organized that is.

Established by the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals in 2005, “GO” Month encourages everyone to get organized.  Start the year by getting your home and your life in tip top shape.

Most people are unsure of how to tackle such a huge undertaking, but like everything else in life, you just have to get started.  Take small steps for big gains.

Step 1

Begin by making a few lists which will help you break down this herculean task into more manageable pieces.

  1. Gather 4 buckets or boxes: 1 for trash, 1 for items to give away or sell, 1 for things to put in storage, and 1 for stuff you want to put away so it’s out of sight.
  2. Make a list of each room of your house; don’t forget the laundry room, basement and garage.
  3. Now create a list of each part of each room with both visible and invisible spaces; be sure to include drawers, cabinets, pantry, closets, file cabinets, under beds, linen closets, etc.

Step 2

Many stores have January sales on storage containers and systems, so pick up a few in different sizes to help you pack up the items you want to keep.  Make sure to label your containers for easy access in the future.

Step 3

Decide which room and parts of that room you’re going to declutter first.  If you currently don’t have daily/weekly To Do lists, start making them.  Then be sure to add at least one day a week to your home organization/declutter project.

Step 4

If you’re too overwhelmed by the amount of stuff in your home, contact a professional organizer for help.  And remember, a real organization of your entire house will probably take longer than one month, so don’t get discouraged.  As long as you’re making some progress, no matter how small, each week, you’re on the right track.

Bill Paying Made Easy

Being truly organized involves more than just organizing the material things in your home.  Hopefully, you’re already paying your bills automatically online.  If not, make it a priority.  You’ll never miss another payment or get charged a late fee if all your bills are electronically paid.

You may also want to improve your finances in the new year by creating a budget.  And budgets are much easier to create if you know what your monthly expenses are.
