adopt senior pet and enjoy solar panels on your home

By Theresa Ficazzola

Each year, the month of November reminds us of what we should be thankful for.  That’s particularly true for pets – we’re thankful they’re in our lives and they’re thankful that they have a family who loves them.

But sadly, that’s not always the case.  Thousands of dogs and cats are stuck in shelters across the country waiting for their forever homes – especially the seniors.

Help a Senior Pet Find Their Forever Home

That’s why November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month.  Dogs and cats are considered seniors at between 7 – 10 years old, which really isn’t that old if you think about it.  However, senior pets only have a 25% adoption rate because everyone wants the cute puppies and kittens, not the old timers.

So, the ASPCA and Petfinder.com created this special “month” in November to draw attention to these incredible animals with the hope that more seniors can find their forever homes before the holidays.

There are many reasons why a senior pet ends up at a shelter.  Most of the time, it’s through no fault of their own.  This is especially true today as many “pandemic” pets are being surrendered to shelters because their families are now too busy to bother with them.  Inflation is also making it more difficult for families to afford the basics, let alone additional resources for a family pet. Other reasons include an owner’s illness or passing, job relocation, or changing home circumstances.

Benefits to Owning a Senior Pet

However, there are many benefits to owning a senior pet.  They are usually:

  • already well trained
  • well behaved
  • good companions
  • more calm with less energy
  • more easily adaptable to a new environment
  • extremely grateful to have a home they can call their own

Be thankful for everything you have this month and consider opening your home and heart to a senior dog or cat.  You’ll be rewarded with so much love and gratitude…and kisses.
