The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the solar industry’s premier national trade association, reports on solar statistics and trends each year. It’s most current 2022 report emphasizes that solar power continues to grow at a steady pace in the U.S. And because of everyone’s efforts, 169 million metric tons of CO2 emissions are reduced annually as a result of U.S. solar installations.
Here’s a quick snapshot of the SEIA’s latest 2022 stats for the solar industry:
- The amount of solar currently installed in the U.S. is 149.5 GW.
- The number of solar industry systems installed in the U.S. is 4,233,150.
- The value of the U.S. solar market is roughly $36 billion.
- Currently, there is enough solar energy installed in the U.S. to power 26 million households.
- The U.S. solar industry grew 24% annually over the past 10 years.
- Today, nearly 5% of U.S. electricity comes from solar energy; that’s almost 11 times its share just a decade ago. 255,037 people are currently employed by the solar industry.
- About 15% of U.S. homes will have solar by 2030.
- 500 GW of new solar capacity will be installed in the U.S. over the next 10 years; that’s 4 times greater than the amount installed through 2022.
- There are over 10,000 solar businesses in the U.S.
- Solar PV prices have declined over the past 10 years by 54%.
- In 2022, a new solar project was installed every 44 seconds.
Solar Helps Reduce Carbon Emissions
Solar energy has reduced carbon emissions by 169 million metric tons annually. That’s equivalent to:
- 38 million vehicles off the road
- 19 billion gallons of gas not used
- 2.8 billion trees planted
- Shuttering 45 coal fired plants
