The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the solar industry’s premier national trade association, reports on solar statistics and trends each year.  It’s most current 2020 report emphasizes that solar power continues to grow at a steady pace in the U.S.

SEIA Stats

Just take a look at the SEIA’s most current findings:

  • The U.S. solar industry grew 43% and installed a record 19.2 gigawatts (GW) of capacity in 2020, according to their Year-in-Review Report.  That’s a record!
  • Today, over 3% of U.S. electricity comes from solar energy; that’s 36 times its share just a decade ago.
  • Currently, there is enough solar energy installed in the U.S. to power 17.7 million households.
  • The amount of solar currently installed in the U.S. is 97.2GW.
  • The number of solar energy systems installed in the U.S. is 2,794,602.
  • The value of the U.S. solar market is roughly $24 billion.
  • Solar PV prices have declined over the past 5 years.
  • The average annual growth of the solar market over the past 10 years was 42%.
  • Over the next 10 years, it’s estimated that 324GW of new solar capacity will be installed.
  • 250,000 people are currently employed by the solar industry.

Solar Helps Reduce Carbon Emissions

Solar energy has reduced carbon emissions by 110 million metric tons annually.  That’s equivalent to:

  • 24 million vehicles off the road
  • 12 billion gallons of gas not used
  • 2 billion trees planted
  • Shuttering 28 coal fired plants

The solar industry has set a goal of reaching 20% electricity generation by 2030.  That represents about 13% of all U.S. homes that will have solar by 2030.
